SALP | Halifax & Saint John

Seasoned lawyers in several practice areas.

SALP is a boutique law firm in Atlantic Canada. We advise individuals on immigration law, employment law, human rights law, corporate commercial and business law, family law, environmental law, and indigenous law.

SALP was founded to give individuals and businesses in Atlantic Canada access to top-notch, thorough, and balanced legal counsel without the overhead of a large firm. We have offices in Halifax and Saint John. Our lawyers practise in specific areas, which means the person working your file is someone who handles that type of matter regularly. We give you a clear picture of your options, the risks attached to each, and what we think you should do. The decision is always yours.

Immigration files are not all the same. Neither are employment disputes or business deals. SALP gives you advice built around your specific facts. We tell you what your options are and what the risks look like — focused on mitigating and, where possible, alleviating overall harm to clients.

Our lawyers each practise in defined areas: immigration, employment, business, corporate commercial, regulatory, environmental, and Indigenous law. When you bring a matter to SALP, it goes to the lawyer who handles that type of work, not the one who is available.

We tell you what a matter will cost before we start. Depending on the file, we offer flat-fee arrangements or hourly billing. We do not charge for brief follow-up questions once a matter is open. No surprises at invoice.

We read contracts carefully, flag what is unclear or one-sided, and tell you where you have room to push back. This applies to employment agreements, commercial contracts, partnership documents, and regulatory filings.

Our Legal Practice Areas

We practise in seven areas of law. Each one is handled by a lawyer with focused experience in that area, not a generalist who covers the file when someone else is busy.

Immigration Law

We handle work permits, study permits, permanent residency applications, family sponsorships, and inadmissibility matters. We also advise employers on bringing foreign workers into Canada and meeting their compliance obligations under IRCC.

Employment Law

We act for both employers and employees. That includes drafting and reviewing employment contracts, advising on terminations and severance, handling workplace disputes, and ensuring compliance with the Nova Scotia Labour Standards Code and the New Brunswick Employment Standards Act.

Business Law

We advise businesses at every stage — from incorporation and shareholder agreements to day-to-day commercial questions. If you are starting a business in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick, we help you choose the right structure and set the legal foundation properly from the start.

Corporate Commercial

We advise on commercial contracts, mergers and acquisitions, due diligence, corporate governance, and shareholder relations. Our clients include private companies in Atlantic Canada negotiating transactions where the legal details matter. Amalgamation and continuance of companies, research agreements, intellectual property law, registration of trademarks and patents for inventions, research work, online applications, and related assets.

Regulatory, Environmental & Indigenous

At SALP, we provide comprehensive legal counsel at the intersection of resource development, environmental stewardship, and Indigenous rights. Our team navigates the complexities of regulatory compliance and environmental assessments while ensuring that the honor of the Crown and treaty obligations are upheld.

Why SALP?

Focused Practice Areas

SALP lawyers practise in specific areas of law. That means you are not paying for someone to get up to speed on your type of matter. We know the legislation, the regulatory bodies, and the procedural steps relevant to your file before you call.

Clear Advice

We tell you what your options are, what each one costs in time and money, and what we would recommend. If the answer is unfavourable, we say so plainly. We do not hold back information that affects your decision.

You Know Where Things Stand

We send updates when there is something to report. If a file is waiting on a third party or a government decision, we tell you that too. You will not need to chase us for a status update.
